SPECIAL COVERAGE. A promotion event organized by US-based Nova Power Solutions on the occasion of the opening of its new liaison office was held in Ankara on March 31st with the participation of many high-ranking officials and invitees. The company, which provides high quality continuous power sources for projects, has opened its office in Turkey following an 18-month preliminary preparation period.

Nova Power Solutions, whose motto is “Providing power solutions to critical applications in difficult environments, when failure is not an option”, was established in 1988. With its headquarters located in Virginia, and its production facilities in California, the company offers a broad spectrum of products and solutions for power saving and backup, including power conditioner systems, Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS), converters, short- and long-termed battery backing solutions, and power distribution systems.

A New Partner for the Turkish Defence Sector
The first speech at the event was given by Süleyman Bayramoğlu, Business Development Specialist in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Region at Nova Power Solutions. Drawing attention to the nationwide power outage that occurred on the day of the event, Bayramoğlu described that “Since 10:30 am today there has been a power outage across most of Turkey. Presently in Ankara, there are lights only at the Roma Square. We had installed Nova Power Solutions products there last Friday, and had performed initial trials yesterday. We can now see that they function perfectly well, without having to perform further trials today.” Describing the company and its activities, Bayramoğlu state that: “We are a company focusing exclusively on a specific area: develop high quality, reliable and robust power sources. We provide products and solutions tailored according to customer, project or application requirements. We have been conducting studies for entering the Turkish market for nearly two years, and we are now in the process of implementing these studies, which will allow u.s.to better present our products to Turkey and the regional market. Our products are not cheap, and our initial costs are relatively high, but our lifecycle costs are low. We have products that have been functioning uninterrupted for over 15 years.” Referring to defence-related products and solutions, as Nova Power Solutions’ area of specialization, Bayramoğlu listed their independently functioning systems installed in cabin shelves, as well as their specially designed power supply systems for mission-critical systems in tactical land vehicles, ships and other military environments. Bayramoğlu further described the difference of Nova Power Solutions as follows:

  • Nearly 80 percent of system malfunctions are associated with power supply circuits. Nova remedies 98 percent of these problems.
  • Over the past 25 years, the company has established a broad installation and system infrastructure across the world with over 40,000 products.
  • The company provides customer-oriented and consulting-based design, sales and post-sales services.
  • The company has extensive experience in logistics and supply chain management, and provides continuous support for its products throughout their lifecycle.
  • The company ensures low cost of ownership.

Bayramoğlu went on to list the company’s objectives for Turkey:

  • To create synergy with Nova Power Solutions’ products and services based on Turkey’s current level of technological development.
  • To cooperate with the Turkish defence sector and industrial manufacturing sectors
  • To contribute to the development of high quality and reliable systems that can be marketed not only in the Turkish market, but also in the region and around the world.

Lawrence C. Mandel, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Ankara, also gave a brief speech during the event. Drawing attention to the increasing trade between the United States and Turkey, Mandel noted that the mutual trade volume had increased by 29 percent since 2010, leading to a decrease of $2 billion in Turkey’s trade deficit during this period. Mandel described how the U.S. Department of Commerce had organized a defence and aerospace-related visit to Turkey on December 2012 that was attended by 18 United States companies, of which Nova Power Solutions was one. Main Objective is to Increase Power Quality During the event, Kurt Worden, Business Development Manager at Nova Power Solutions, gave a presentation describing the technical aspects of the company’s solutions. Worden first explained the concept of power quality, which is defined as the synchronization of voltage frequency and phase, with high power quality enabling the optimum utilization of electrical power.

Factors reducing power quality include transient voltage increases, transient voltage decreases, sudden power surges resulting from such events as lightning strikes, frequency changes and changes in wave forms (harmonics). The increasing size and complexity of electrical networks may also lead to a rapid decrease in power quality, and which can lead to nearly €150 billion in losses in the EU-25 countries, and nearly $120 billion losses in the United States. Furthermore, approximately 70 percent of malfunctions in electronic equipment stem from power quality-related problems. Worden described that their main market is the defence sector, and naval platforms in particular, in that naval platforms contain large and extensive electrical networks. Worden stated that, due to inefficient electrical production, the U.S. Navy needlessly consumes an additional $1.8 billion of fuel every year. Sharing his views and assessment of the defence sector during his speech, Worden described that the power-related problems experienced by U.S. Navy’s USNS Montford Point (T-MLP-1) vessel, the Hungarian Air Forces’ Simulation Training Systems and the U.S. Navy’s Ship Broadcasting Systems were all resolved by Nova Power Solutions.

Worden concluded by stating their objectives in Turkey: “During the commerce-related visit we carried out in 2012, it seemed very clear that Turkey required the technologies developed by Nova. We wish to engage in a long-term cooperation with Turkey, and to reach and access this region through Turkey.” Another speaker during the event was Alexander Shafer, the Business Development Director of Clary Corporation, the manufacturing partner of Nova Power Solutions. Following his speech, Shafer presented a mechanical calculator produced by his company that has been in active and operational use since 1938 as a gift to the Rahmi Koç Museum, where the event was organized.
